BioGrove Shafter was William F Knowland's last political fixer in Oakland. He started working for Knowland before WW II, and while Knowland was serving in the armed forces helped to procure large contracts for the Kaiser concrete company for Liberty ships. After the war, he was on Knowland's staff in the Senate, and continued the policies of graft and corruption in the classic California tradition of Carpentier, Stanford, and Huntington, and was a key player in the buyout of the Key system by General Motors, Firestone, and Kaiser.
In gratitude, the portion of Highway 24 between the MacArthur Maze and the Caldicott tunnel was named for him.
I've created this identity in honor of the tangled history of California, which is one of my current fascinations.
Sarcastic Halli is named after a character in the Icelandic sagas who was very friendly with the King of Norway one summer, but the next summer, he wasn't welcome in the king's bedchamber. You may also find me around the internet as Halli Pallson (I've taken the Icelandic custom of using a patronymic in memory of my father, Paul).
